St. John’s – Newfoundland and Labrador’s two NDP MPs are coming down hard on the latest shot to the province by the Harper Conservatives, cuts to Parks Canada that will impact major tourist attractions.

638 Parks Canada jobs have been declared surplus and 408 people in the Atlantic region are expected to receive affected letters. Services at most National Parks and historic sites will be impacted with reduced hours.

OTTAWA – Today in the House of Commons, New Democrat M.P. Jack Harris (St. John’s East) called on the Conservative government to align Canada’s search and rescue (SAR) response times to international standards to ensure the safety of all Canadians. The first hour of debate on M-314, Harris’ Private Member’s motion, took place in the House of Commons today.

ST. JOHN’S – Jack Harris, M.P. (St. John’s East) has been appointed Defence Critic in NDP Leader Thomas Mulcair’s shadow cabinet as of yesterday. He returns to this post after serving six months as the official opposition’s Justice Critic.

Harris was appointed Justice Critic last October by interim leader, Nycole Turmel, as a part of changes made to accommodate the leadership race. 

St. John's - New Democrat Members of Parliament Jack Harris (St. John's East) and Ryan Cleary (St. John's South - Mount Pearl) are slamming Thursday's federal budget, saying drastic cuts to public sector jobs and services is not the way to stabilize and grow the economy.

OTTAWA – On the third anniversary of the tragic Cougar helicopter crash Member of Parliament Jack Harris (St. John’s East) along with the NDP Transportation Critic, Member of Parliament Olivia Chow (Trinity–Spadina), renew the NDP’s call for the implementation of the recommendations made by the Transportation Safety Board (TSB).

“In order to truly honour the memory of those lost on March 12, 2009 we must do everything we can to prevent history from repeating itself,” said Harris.
