Statement on Jack Harris's Political Future
Jack Harris, Member of Parliament for St. John's East released this statement today:
“After careful consideration over the past number of weeks I have made the decision not to offer myself for election to the next Parliament, whenever that election will be.
“I want to thank the people of St. John’s East for their support over the years. It has been a pleasure to work with them and with all the communities in my riding.
“I am very grateful to my wife, Ann Martin, who has shared this journey with me and to our children, Amelia, Sarah and John, who have been very supportive of me over the years.
“I have had the wonderful opportunity to sit in four federal Parliaments since 1987 and five general assemblies of the Newfoundland and Labrador House of Assembly for a cumulative total of over 25 years and I am very grateful to the people of St. John’s East for giving me the privilege to serve them.
“I want to thank Jagmeet Singh for his strong and passionate Leadership in fighting for a better Canada and constant focus on ensuring Canadians have the help they need to get through this pandemic. I wish him and my NDP caucus the very best moving forward. I am proud of the work we have done together in this Parliament and know that the NDP is the party to make the changes that our country needs.
“I am proud of the work that our party has done to make life better for Canadians and to have served under the leadership of Ed Broadbent, Jack Layton, Thomas Mulcair, and now Jagmeet Singh and with so many dedicated and committed New Democrat colleagues.
“I will continue to serve my constituents here in St. John’s East and in Parliament until the next election, and when the time comes I look forward to campaigning with our Leader Jagmeet Singh to help elect the next NDP Member of Parliament for St. John’s East.”
